Another school year has come and gone for student-athletes at Farmersville High School.

It was a successful year in so many ways.

The Farmers’ football team played in the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2016, the volleyball team qualified for the postseason for the 11th consecutive season, the baseball team made it to the second round of the playoffs for the fourth year in a row, the girls’ basketball team overcame a sluggish start to clinch a playoff berth, the boys’ soccer team made the playoffs for the first time and both the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed in the area meet for the first time since 2018.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the year that was for each sport. Fall sports will be reviewed this week, winter sports in the June 26 edition of the Farmersville Times and spring sports in the July 3 paper.

Football team takes next step in Quinlan era:

The Farmers have improved every year under Zac Quinlan since he was hired as Farmersville head football coach in 2022.

After going 2-8 in 2022, the Farmers took a big step in his second season by finishing 7-4 and making the playoffs for the first time 2019. Last fall proved to be Farmersville’s best season under Quinlan. The Farmers won eight contests and won their first playoff game since 2016.

Farmersville nearly didn’t make the playoffs. In fact, they were less than two minutes away from seeing their postseason hopes dashed by Sanger. However, thanks to an onside kick recovery and a touchdown pass from McAbee to Grimes as time expired, followed by a Christian Aguilar PAT kick, the Farmers stunned the Indians 39-38 to clinch a playoff berth.

That was the start of even bigger things to come for Farmersville. The Farmers put together their best overall team effort of the season the following week in a 27-0 victory over Canton in the bi-district round of the Class 4A Division II playoffs.

Farmersville’s season came to a crashing halt the following week in a 63-7 loss to Pleasant Grove.

Volleyball team extends playoff streak:

Coming into this past season, the Lady Farmers had to replace three impact players from their 2023 season’s team that went 37-6 and made it to the third round of the postseason: Rendi Fetty, the district’s most valuable player of the year, Sophia White, the District 14-4A setter of the year, and Cayla Huff.

Graduation and all, head coach Arian May and her coaching staff had the Lady Farmers firing on all cylinders by the time that District 13-4A play started.

Led by great senior leadership from alumna Bella Holland and Margo Ingram, the right arms of alumna Kenah Brown and rising junior outside hitter Peighton Purser, solid all-around play by incoming utility Rylie Cottongame, and good sets by alumna Isabella Deluco, Farmersville had a 28-16 overall record and earned another playoff berth.

Holland was named the district’s utility player of the year after set the single season school record in digs (507).

Pleasant Grove ended Farmersville’s season in the bi-district round of the Class 4A Division II playoffs, with the Lady Hawks winning the match in three sets.

Cross country teams compete in regional meet:

For the first time since 2018, Farmersville qualified both its boys’ and girls’ cross country teams for the regional meet.

The Farmer boys captured second place in the team standings at the District 13-4A meet, while the Lady Farmers, who amassed 67 points, edged Caddo Mills (70) by three points to earn third place.

Farmersville’s younger runners stepped up in a big way. Rising senior Bryan Mujica turned in the top time for the Farmers, running to bronze with a 17:12.61. Incoming junior Luke Lair was sixth overall in 17:48.25. Rising junior Landon Green finished two places behind Lair in eighth overall with an 18:01.29. Incoming senior Miller claimed ninth overall in 18:03.46.

Southern Sanders continued her standout freshman season by placing sixth in the district meet in a time of 15:19.41.

Rising juniors Breelynn Pollard took 11th with a 15:34.78. Dani Penaloza, also a junior, placed 14th in 15:52.87, while incoming junior Chloe Jones ran to 17th in 16:01.62 and senior Gavriella Soto was 19th in 16:03.09.

No one from Farmersville qualified for the Class 4A state meet.
