160 years of Bain-Honaker House history will be celebrated on August 16, from 4 to 7 p.m.
The Farmersville Historical Society is inviting longtime residents, history enthusiasts — or curious newcomers — to help make history again at a special event celebrating one of the city’s beloved landmarks: the Bain-Honaker House.
A time-honored celebration is planned from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, August 16, at the historic home on College Street in honor of its 160 years of history. The event will feature lawn games, craft tents, refreshments, historic photo re-creations and a community time capsule ceremony.
“It is Victorian-themed, croquet on the lawn, white tents, etc.,” said Heidi Foist, president of the Farmersville Historical Society. “There will be activities occurring throughout these three hours.”
One of the highlights of the celebration will be the burial of a new time capsule at 5 p.m. Contributions are welcome from community members and should be turned in no later than 4:45 p.m. on the day of the event.
“We welcome you to contribute a small meaningful item, or an everyday item, letter, note, something that represents our town, our time, our shared stories,” Foist said. “These contributions will be sealed in a time capsule to preserve the spirit of our community for future generations, not to be opened for at least 100 years.”
Each submission must include the contributor’s name and a brief explanation of the item’s significance.
Foist said the time capsule idea came to mind as she was going through the Rike files, a collection of historical memorabilia and newspaper clippings on loan to the Historical Society.
“Why not have our members place their time-sake pieces and notes, letters and a copy of The Farmersville Times in a box and we bury for at least 100 years?” she said.
While the idea initially began as a project for Historical Society members, the opportunity quickly expanded.
“As I was writing the details for it, it dawned on me as to why not open this for the citizens of Farmersville as well!” Foist said. “So, we are making this a community-wide event, not just for our members.”
Earlier in the day, from 1 to 4 p.m., private Victorian tea parties will be hosted inside the home. Tickets are $25 and include tea service, dress-up items, free gloves and photo opportunities. As of press time, only a few spaces remained.
“The tea party has been a huge success,” Foist said. “We sold out of the spaces minus one within the first 24 hours. I have reopened four spaces, and for right now we have five spaces available.”
Attendees can find more details on the event by contacting the Farmersville Historical Society at [email protected].
