In the latest step, council denied the preliminary plat for the controversial Islamic Association of Collin County Cemetery.

The proposed cemetery located off CR 557 and Hwy. 380 in the city’s extraterritorial jurisdiction has been the topic of heated conversation since originally brought to the table in 2015.

On the agenda at the Tuesday, July 11 city council meeting, the cemetery project was once again the topic of discussion regarding the preliminary plat.

Preceding the regular council agenda, members had a closed session with City Attorney Alan Lathrom for approximately an hour regarding a “discussion of laws applicable to platting and cemeteries,” according to the posted agenda. Council also reconvened into closed session for more discussion prior to the item being talked about in the regular council meeting.

Attorney-client privilege is one of the items according to Texas Government Code Section 551.071 for which councils can host closed sessions.
