The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been called in regard to a ransom-ware virus that has drastically impacted city of Farmersville operations.

The city was hit with a Doctor December ransom-ware virus at 3:15 a.m. Monday, May 21 through Window’s update manager.

“It was nothing anyone did,” City Manager Ben White said.

In ransom-ware viruses there is an option for paying the ransom to restore systems, some of which can be more than $50,000, White stated that is not an option the city considered.

“We don’t believe in paying terrorists,” he said. “We had some of the best anti-virus software out there. They are delivering viruses through mechanisms we’ve never thought of before.”
