FARMERSVILLE – With first place on the line in District 5-4A Div. II, it only seemed fitting that Friday night’s game between Farmersville and Van Alstyne needed overtime.
Both teams scratched and clawed through the first four quarters with the contest going to overtime after the Panthers mishandled the snap on a potential game-winning 33-yard field goal attempt as time expired.
But in a game that featured four lead changes and four ties, it was the legs of Van Alstyne senior quarterback Brady Carson that did in Farmersville in a 42-35 loss for the Farmers at Farmers Stadium.
Carson ran for touchdowns of 1 and 10 yards in regulation before he put the Panthers ahead for good on an 11-yard scamper on the first possession of overtime. He also threw for a 48-yard touchdown pass.
Farmersville got the ball next, but sophomore quarterback Levi McAbee was sacked near midfield to end the game.
McAbee threw three touchdown passes — all to senior Drake Grimes — on throws of 24, 19 and 16 yards.
Junior running back Gordon Swartz had touchdown runs of 58 and 45 yards.
