Capacity concerns at the Collin County Animal Shelter dominated discussion during the Collin County Commissioners Court meeting Monday, March 23, as officials addressed ongoing strain on the regional facility and directed staff to take steps to manage intake levels.
The shelter, located at 4750 Community Ave. in McKinney, routinely operates at or near capacity, driven in part by rapid population growth across Collin County and increased demand from multiple cities that rely on the facility through interlocal agreements. Commissioners noted that the shelter has faced overcrowding issues for years as intake numbers continue to rise.
As part of the discussion, the court directed staff to communicate with partner cities indicating the county would not accept animals that would push the shelter beyond its capacity. Under current operations, the facility can reach over 100 percent occupancy, at which point cities are notified and may be required to make alternative arrangements or face additional costs.
