Home rule charter passes in Farmersville

Updated 10 a.m. May 8, 2022

With all voting centers in the county reporting as of 11 p.m. May 7., Mayor Bryon Wiebold, seeking his second term, has earned 78.7 percent of the 230 votes cast.

Challenger Denise Kelly collected 49 votes compared to Wiebold’s 181.

Council members Terry Williams and Mike Henry will serve another term in Place 2 and Place 4, respectively. Both ran unopposed.

The city’s effort to switch to Home Rule from a state law charter was also successful.

Voters overwhelmingly voted for Proposition A which will allow the city to adopt a Home Rule charter. A total of 233 votes were cast and 174, or 74.7 percent, were in favor of the charter.

At the state-wide level, both constitutional amendments to lower property taxes will pass. Proposition 1 has about 87% of the vote in favor of the measure and Proposition 2 has about 85% of the votes in favor of increasing the homestead exemption related to public school ad valorem taxation to $40,000.
