Early voting process running smoothly

by | Oct 28, 2016 | Latest

Collin County Elections Administrator Bruce Sherbet reported that he has received some calls about vote errors in early voting that started Monday, Oct. 24, but believes the process is running smoothly.

He explained that number of complaints is not large enough to question the accuracy of voting machines, but that all reports are investigated.

“Everything in Collin County is showing to be just fine,” Sherbet said. “We did receive some calls and we take them very seriously.”

The elections administrator recalled that one complaint of an error in balloting turned out to be voter error and he advises everyone to carefully review their choices before submitting their ballot.

One way in which ballots could be changed from a voter’s intended choices if by selecting the straight party option, then going through the ballot and selecting individual candidates for offices. The process of selecting individual candidates after choosing the straight party option can result in those individuals being de-selected.

Sherbet also noted that voting machine screens are sensitive and a light touch can result in a selection being made. He cautions voters to not rest their hands on the screen because of their sensitivity.

If a voter suspects that their choices are not being accurately recorded, Sherbet advises that the voter immediately contact a poll worker for assistance.

“The single, first rule in voting is to look at the summary screen before you cast your ballot,” Sherbet said. Signs have been posted in polling locations reminding voters to carefully review their choices.

The elections administrator pointed out that turnout has been heavy, 69 percent above the previous highest Collin County voter participation, and explained that can be from higher interest in the 2016 election, population growth, or a desire by voters to beat the rush.

Sherbet reported that there are 80,000 more registered voters in Collin County than there were in 2012.

“I don’t think there is one, single thing that is causing the turnout,” he said.

Early voting continues through Friday, Nov. 4. Collin County voters can cast early ballots at any election center. Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 8.
